Sam James has said his side have what it takes to get a winning start in the European Champions Cup this Saturday.
Sale Sharks travel to Llanelli to get their European campaign underway, and face Pro12 outfit Scarlets before coming up against Toulon the next weekend.
“We’re looking for a fresh start,” explained the young Englishman.
“We’ve had a bit of an up-and-down start to the Aviva Premiership, but this is what we played for last year, to get a spot in the Champions Cup. We’re ready to give it everything we’ve got.”
Despite addressing his side’s inconsistencies this season, the centre knows that if the team find their form from last year then they’ll be able to get a result.
“Getting the win is all down to us,” he admitted.
“If we get our hands on the ball and start attacking with the shape we worked on all last year, there’s no reason we can’t score some points. We showed that it worked last year and it’s all about getting that going again.”
James returned from a hamstring injury in the Sharks’ 30-3 loss last weekend, and the centre revealed it feels good to be back on the pitch.
“It’s good to be back in the mix. We messed up a bit at the weekend in our attacking shape, but our defence was good and it was just two easy tries that cost us. But it’s good to be back.
“This week we’ve been focussing on ourselves and getting some skills work in. We’re working on stuff we didn’t do so well last weekend, and we want to rectify that.”
The Sharks face Scarlets, Toulon and Saracens in Pool C of this year’s competition, and James explained that they’ll be taking each game as it comes.
“There will be an end goal, but obviously we want to get out of the group so we’ll just take every game as it comes.
“We want to get started with an away win at Scarlets this weekend and really focus on our home games. We’ll see where we lie two or three games in, then hopefully have another shot at an away game and steal some points there.”
